Salvinia
Salvinia (Salvinia molesta)
This plant is a Weed of National Significance. It must not be sold anywhere in New South Wales.
How does this weed affect you?
Salvinia is a water weed that forms dense mats that can smother the surface of the water. It prevents native water plants from growing and reduces water quality, which causes stagnant water and unpleasant odours. This provides a habitat for mosquitoes to breed.
The growth of Salvinia reduces food and habitat available to fish and other aquatic animals. Salvinia can also reduce or prevent the use of waterways for recreation and transport as well as block irrigation channels and equipment.
Salvinia is capable of interfering with flood gates and can reduce the visual appeal of waterways overall.
