People with disability
At Council, we are committed to providing services, facilities and events that everyone in the community can participate in and enjoy.
We are always working to make sure:
- Council information and services are accessible and easy to understand
- venues are easy to enter
- the community is aware of important issues for people with disability.
Disability Inclusion Action Plan
Council’s Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2022-2025(PDF, 3MB) aims to make Kempsey Shire an accessible and inclusive place to live, visit, work and play.
The guiding principles in the plan are:
- increasing positive attitudes and behaviours towards people with disability
- making Kempsey Shire more accessible, inclusive and liveable
- increasing meaningful education and employment for those with disability
- improving access to Council’s services through better systems and processes.
The plan sets out the actions Council will take in the next three years as we work towards greater inclusion and accessibility.

Community development programs
Council recognises and celebrates people with disability by hosting and promoting events for the International Day of People with Disability, including a Glitz and Glamour Ball and a Big Day Out with activities, entertainment and market stalls.
These events involve many people and promote inclusion, interaction and community awareness.
Community services
The Kempsey Community Directory has names and contact information for organisations that provide support and services to people with disability.
Library home lending service
Kempsey Shire Libraries have a free home delivery service for residents who can't visit their local library.

Macleay Disability Inclusion Group
The Macleay Disability Inclusion Group runs events and promotes public messages and campaigns that:
- highlight inclusion
- recognise the rights and contributions of people with disability in the community
- inform Council of issues facing people with disability in the community.
Meetings
The Macleay Disability Inclusion Group meets on the first Tuesday of every month from 3.30pm to 4.30pm.

Beach Mobility Aids
With support from the Macleay Disability Inclusion Group, beach mobility aids are available for hire across the Kempsey Shire, through a trial initiative aimed at making our beaches more accessible to all.
Public toilet map
The National Public Toilet Map shows the location of more than 19,000 toilet facilities across Australia.
It includes information on accessibility, adult change and baby care facilities.
Master Locksmith Association Key
The Master Locksmith Association Key (MLAK) is a key that fits into specially designed locks to give people access to public facilities.
People with disability can purchase an MLAK key to open toilets, playground equipment and other venues across Australia.

Emergencies
The Australian Red Cross has information to help people with disability or chronic illness to prepare for emergencies.
