Joy McKean, acclaimed singer-songwriter, musician and wife of the late Slim Dusty passed away peacefully last night surrounded by her loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 93 years old.
Joy's immense talent shone through in her compositions, as she crafted numerous of her husband Slim Dusty's most iconic songs. Her remarkable contribution to the music industry was acknowledged when she received the inaugural Golden Guitar award at the Tamworth Country Music Festival for her heartfelt creation, 'Lights on the Hill.' In recent years Joy supported the Slim Dusty Foundation and Council through the transition of the Slim Dusty Centre to Kempsey Shire Council.
Joy will forever be cherished as a trailblazer in Australian music. Through her artistry, she brought communities together and gifted us with countless extraordinary moments in time that will be etched in our memories.
Our thoughts are with the Kirkpatrick family and loved ones.
From Tuesday 30 May, Council will have a condolence book at the Slim Dusty Centre for community and visitors to share their special memories.
