Why South West Rocks Sports Fields were closed

Over the weekend, South West Rocks locals were understandably frustrated that their sports fields remained closed while others were open.

On Monday 24 April, the sports fields at South West Rocks were inspected and closed for safety concerns. These safety concerns on the playing surface of South West Rocks sports fields were not obvious from a distance.

Kempsey Shire Council staff noted that Field One was closed due to several divots on the surface and Field Two was closed as it was too wet for use.

Dylan Reeves, Group Manager Infrastructure Delivery at Kempsey Shire Council said the safety of sports fields users is the priority.

“Staff check the condition of sports fields on business days to make an informed call if they are safe or risk injury to users,” said Mr Reeves.

“In the case of South West Rocks fields, the repairs are the responsibility of South West Rocks Country Club. At present, there are divots scattered throughout Field One that pose a significant risk. While these are a common occurrence, and can normally be resolved quickly, unfortunately mid-week rain meant the Country Club was unable to use their equipment to repair them without causing further damage.”

“Community safety is the priority and sports fields aren’t always closed due to wet weather. When a safety concern is raised Council ultimately has to decide whether to open or close fields.”

“We empathise with sporting groups using South West Rocks sports fields and we know it is very frustrating to miss out on training and home games. We are working with the Country Club to help repair Field One as soon as possible.”

Field Two has since been reopened.

Sporting teams should check with their clubs as using a sports field when they have been closed can sometimes mean players aren’t covered by club insurance.

Community sport is of huge importance to residents and Council. Council works hard year-round with local sporting groups to have fields match-ready and it is unfortunate when we do have to close fields for safety reasons.

The good news is that as of 2 May, Field One is now safe to be opened.

Council thanks residents and sporting clubs for their understanding and patience.
