In the spirit of resilience and community spirit, Willawarrin Public School played host to a heartwarming Recovery Day on Thursday 23 November, courtesy of Kempsey Shire Council's dedicated Recovery Team.

Originally scheduled earlier, but postponed due to the recent fires that affected the community, the event finally came to life, aligning seamlessly with the school's end-of-year plans.

The day was tailored to provide a safe and supportive environment for children to share their experiences, ask questions of emergency services, and gain insights into the methods employed by local heroes to keep them safe.

A myriad of engaging activities unfolded throughout the day, leaving lasting impressions on the young minds.

The ReCommunity Project Unleashes Creativity

Partnering with Mid North Coast Community College and supported by funding from the NSW Government, The ReCommunity Project offered the children a chance to explore their creative side.

Together, they crafted a vibrant mural, a reminder of their collective strength and creativity that will proudly adorn the classroom.

Australian Red Cross Guides Pillowcase Project

The Australian Red Cross took charge of the Pillowcase Project, a preparedness education program that instils essential skills in students.

The children absorbed lessons on personal and family preparedness, safety skills, local hazards, and coping mechanisms in the face of natural disasters.

SES Units Navigate the Waters of Preparedness

Local Kempsey and South West Rocks SES units took centre stage, enlightening the students about the gravity of floodwaters and their pivotal role as the State Emergency Service.

The children eagerly explored the flood boat, tested their line-throwing skills on the school's oval, and gained insights into the indispensable equipment carried by SES heroes.

RFS Engagement Sparks Fire Safety Knowledge

The Lower North Coast RFS Engagement team, alongside the Temagog and Willawarrin RFS brigades, showcased the diverse fleet of RFS trucks and their firefighting capabilities.

Excitement filled the air as the children took turns operating the fire hose and learning the techniques employed by firefighting professionals.

Mental Health Support Shines Bright

The Mid North Coast Mental Health Disaster Recovery Team added a compassionate touch to the day, offering resources and engaging in conversations about mental health—an essential component of recovery often overlooked. Their presence highlighted the holistic approach to community well-being.

To top off the day, a free barbecue lunch was generously provided, creating a friendly atmosphere that reinforced the sense of community.

In the end, Willawarrin Public School's Recovery Day proved to be more than just an educational event; it was a beacon of hope, resilience, and unity. The smiles on the kids faces encapsulated the triumph of the event on what can only be described as a fun day for all.
