Point Plomer Road sealing completed in time for holiday rush

The residents and visitors traveling along Point Plomer Road this Summer will have a much smoother and safer ride after Kempsey Shire Council completed the sealing the two gravel sections of the road this week.
On Tuesday, Council completed the lane marking that completes the road surface, with only speed signage yet to be installed. This will occur following a Transport for NSW assessment.
12 months ago, the flooding rains experienced over Christmas damaged the road significantly, highlighting the need for the work to enhance road user safety and improve the liveability for local residents.
Kempsey Shire Council General Manager, Craig Milburn, said the completion of the project was a huge benefit for residents and visitors.
“From the outset, the primary goal in sealing Point Plomer Road was to provide a safer road, and by finishing this on time we’ve secured that safety for the peak holiday season,” said Mr Milburn.
“This is also a big win for residents. Not just those who live nearby who will benefit from reduced noise and dust, but for the whole shire with a marked reduction in environmental damage and ratepayers no longer funding the ongoing costly gravel road maintenance activities.”
The sealing replaces the two gravel sections of 4km and 2.2km out of the 11.8km length of Point Plomer Road that Council maintains, running from Crescent Head Road to Big Hill, where the road enters Limeburners Creek National Park.
In October 2018, Council successfully sought a grant of $2.88m under the RestartNSW Regional Growth – Environment and Tourism Fund Program, which combined with $720k from Council funded the project.
Member for Oxley, Melinda Pavey, said the $3.6m project was great news for the region.
“Given the high traffic volumes experienced along Point Plomer Road, this local investment will enhance safety and reduce ongoing maintenance costs,” Ms Pavey said.
“It’s also anticipated the upgrade will result in less long-term environmental impact than the current regular cycle of grading and gravel re-sheeting.
“We know how important good local roads are to the region and I’d like to congratulate Council for their efforts in bringing this project to fruition”.
Work to seal the two sections of road commenced in February 2021 and was undertaken by Mid North Coast Contractors Pty Ltd. For more information on this and other major projects being undertaken by Council head to Major projects
