Focus moves to recycling at waste facilities as mobile trailer recycled for education role
Kempsey Shire Council is committed to offering the best possible waste service for the community and the environment, through the best use - and reuse - of all our resources.
With more than 40 years’ experience managing the disposal of household problem waste in a tightly regulated industry, the Waste team need to ensure every facility is delivering according to the highest standards.
Following analysis of regulatory changes and recent use, the difficult decision has been made to end the mobile recycling trailer program to enable more focus on education and the permanent facilities.
Records for this year indicate that the service averaged only 8 users per visit, with each visit lasting up to 4.5 hours and a total staff commitment of 158 hours.
The trailer, which was obtained with funding from the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) will be used by Council as an educational tool, while the Council resources in staffing and funds that were used to run the program will be retargeted towards service at the existing waste facilities.
Council’s Manager Commercial Business Gayleen Burley said shifting regulatory requirements and declining use of the service were factors in making this decision.
“Based on changing storage requirements and less use of the service, the decision has been made to focus all recycling of problem household waste at permanent waste facilities. The mobile community recycling centre will be finishing on 27 September.
We are focusing on improving the experience and operations at our permanent waste stations and will use the mobile van at relevant events for community education," said Ms Burley.
Residents can continue to recycle their problem household wastes such as oils, e-waste and batteries for free at their local waste facility. To check what you can drop off for free please visit www.ksc.pub/recycle
