A message from the Mayor: The power of community
Published on 27 February 2023
Last week we held the official opening of the Mid North Coast High Performance Centre in South West Rocks. It is adjacent to the Country Club and the Golf course.
I was deeply impressed by this marvellous community working with Council to deliver this amazing project.
Planning for the High Performance Centre began in 2016, two years before half the funding was secured from the NSW Government. It was the vision of local architect Peter Hadlow in partnership with local sports and recreation groups who made this project happen just as much as the SWR Country Club and dedicated Council staff.
As our distinguished Member for Oxley, Melinda Pavey, said at the event, the community was “instrumental in all of this. Ideas are easy. It’s easy to have a simple idea. But turning an idea into something is very different. It requires a lot of dedication and hard work.”
It’s also easy to say “Council should do something.” Council is, and will continue to do, a great deal. That said, the truly great work is done when the community comes together with passion and commitment.
Now we have a landmark for South West Rocks that is not only a magnificent draw card for the Shire and an outstanding facility for local sports players, but also a monument to what the community can achieve when we work together.
What’s next for South West Rocks?
In 2019 Council approved a Master Plan for the Horseshoe Bay area and the revitalisation works outlined in that document continue.
Starting in May of this year, the headland carpark and portions of the headland walkway to the surf club will be closed during construction while we carry out a major upgrade to the headland carpark, which will bring a host of new benefits to the area. Information on this and the entire Horseshoe Bay revitalisation project can be found at www.ksc.pub/horseshoe.
Progress has also been made on designs for the new Community Hub which the Master Plan provides to replace the existing kiosk and amenities. The potential for an additional café and event space has been identified and Council wants to know if this is something the community would like us to include.
