A message from the Mayor: Can you make our community better?

Recently I went to several events where many people again showed me the value of community spirit in the Kempsey Shire.

These days some people, for a variety of reasons, stay at home and unintentionally become isolated from our Shire community. On a positive note, there are many more people who engage with others at a wide variety of events.

Some organisations, such as surf lifesaving clubs and sporting groups, give many people the opportunity to contribute to a life that makes our world a better place.

CWA Centenary Celebration

The Country Women's Association celebrates its centenary this year.

One hundred years ago at Crookwell NSW a group of women came together to improve their life cooperatively in their local area. They were fighting isolation and a lack of health facilities.

Since that time the CWA has become the largest women’s organisation in Australia. Here in NSW there are over 10,000 members in 370 branches. It was an honour to attend the South West Rocks morning tea centenary celebration a week ago.

Yes, there were scones with cream and jam! There were many members from our area attending. They showed me how much they enjoy being part of the organisation. As always, the CWAs in the Shire would welcome any women who would like to be a member.

Kempsey’s Catholic Church Centenary

In July 1922 the impressive All Saints Catholic Church was opened and dedicated. It was built in six months! The then Kempsey Mayor, Alderman Henderson was in attendance for the opening. Last Sunday the parishioners celebrated the centenary. Churches throughout the Shire all contribute to the social and spiritual well-being of the community.

NAIDOC Week 2022

I was also impressed with the variety of events held throughout the Shire in NAIDOC Week to celebrate the pivotal place that the Dunghutti and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people hold and their many contributions to our community.

So many people attended, and enthusiasm, excitement, participation and enjoyment were all on display. I think our Aboriginal people’s history, culture and expectation of a positive future should be supported by everyone.

A call to participate

I would respectfully ask each person to take part in our community activities, or to take another step and join one of the many community organisations, where you volunteer, enjoy other people’s company, and form new friendships.
