Long Leaf Willow Primrose

Kempsey Shire is facing a serious problem as several infestations of LONG LEAF WILLOW PRIMROSE (Ludwigia longifolia), an invasive aquatic weed, have been identified in the area. The first infestation was discovered on Armidale Road at Skillion Flat, followed by several wet areas in South West Rocks.

Long Leaf Willow Primrose poses a biosecurity risk and is regulated by the general biosecurity duty, which requires any person who deals with any plant to prevent, eliminate or minimise any biosecurity risk they may pose. Land managers are also responsible for mitigating the spread of the plant from their land.

Crucially, anyone with machinery involved in cleaning of drains where this plant exists must not go to other clean areas until the machinery has been cleaned off thoroughly onsite.

Kempsey Shire Council Weeds Officer, Greg Egan, said Council is seeking the assistance of all relevant stakeholders in identifying and controlling the infestations.

“We are taking immediate action to control the infestations and prevent the spread of Long Leaf Willow Primrose in the Shire. However, we need the support of the community and contractors to ensure that this invasive weed is kept under control.”

Community members can assist by reporting any infestations to the relevant authorities and following biosecurity measures to prevent the spread of Long Leaf Willow Primrose
