Liz Campbell honoured with Medal of the Order of Australia

Kempsey Shire Council is delighted to announce that former Mayor Liz Campbell has been recognised for her exceptional dedication and service to local government and the Kempsey community.
Liz has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM), a well-deserved honour that reflects her unwavering commitment to the betterment of our shire.
Craig Milburn, Kempsey Shire Council General Manager, said he was delighted to hear about the award.
"It was a privilege to work with Liz. her passion for the community was second to none." said Mr Milburn.
During her tenure as Mayor, Liz demonstrated remarkable leadership, vision, and political acumen, leaving an indelible mark on Kempsey Shire Council and its residents. Serving as a councillor since 2008, Liz was elected as Deputy Mayor for two years before assuming the role of Mayor in 2011. In 2012, she became the first popularly elected Mayor in the Macleay Valley, and her dedication to the community led to her re-election in 2016 for a second four-year term, which was extended due to the pandemic until December last year.
Liz's tireless dedication and work ethic have been exemplary, leaving an enduring impact on the Kempsey Shire community. Her unwavering loyalty and commitment to improving the quality of life for all residents have been instrumental in fostering a sense of belonging and inclusivity across the shire.
Beyond her role in local government, Liz has been deeply involved in various service organisations within the Macleay Valley. Her extensive executive positions with the Macleay Valley Business Chamber and her dedication to Rotary, for which she was awarded the esteemed Paul Harris Fellow Medal, exemplify her passion for community service. Additionally, Liz's contributions as the Chair of the Australia Day Committee and the Mid North Coast Joint Organisation have been invaluable.
Liz's ability to build relationships and her expertise in travel, tourism, and business have been instrumental in positioning the Macleay Valley as a premier tourist destination. Her relentless promotion of the region's natural beauty and positive attractions has played a significant role in boosting the local economy. Initiatives such as the Macleay Valley Food Bowl, which she championed, have contributed to the area's growth and prosperity.
Throughout her mayoralty, Liz demonstrated exceptional leadership during times of adversity, including bushfires, floods, and droughts. She worked tirelessly to raise awareness of the challenges faced by the community and lobbied state and federal governments for support. Liz's compassion extended beyond her official duties, as she provided comfort and assistance to individuals who had suffered great losses. She is a great supporter of the Macleay Vocational College, which provides disadvantaged youth with opportunities to realize their dreams. Liz's dedication also contributed to the successful opening of the Kempsey District Hospital, ensuring high-quality healthcare for local residents.
Her leadership was instrumental in the revitalisation of the CBD through the Kempsey Bypass Masterplan, which transformed the town into an attractive destination. Additionally, Liz's collaboration with government, Council, and businesses resulted in the construction of a state-of-the-art cinema complex, providing a new entertainment hub for the community.
Another significant accomplishment was the establishment of the Country Universities Centre in Kempsey Shire. Liz's unwavering commitment to improving educational facilities and opportunities has allowed local students to pursue higher education close to home.
Liz's exceptional achievements as Mayor have left a lasting legacy in the Kempsey Shire community. Her ability to overcome challenges and advocate for the betterment of the Macleay Valley has been an inspiration to many.
