Using your green bin to recycle your food scraps into premium compost to improve the soil of our local parks and farms, is the message for a new campaign launching across the shire.

Originally Kempsey was part of a pilot program for the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and has now received further funding to encourage all residents with a domestic waste service to recycle their food scraps in their green bin.

Manager Commercial Business, Gayleen Burley, said it is evident more of the community was using the green bin for their food scraps.

“We know from a recent audit that more food scraps are now going into the green bin. This is great news, however the audit also found red bins still have quite a lot of food waste in them which ends up in landfill,” said Ms Burley.

Putting food waste into our green bins to make sure it doesn’t end up in landfill is a win-win for our environment. Food waste in landfill produces methane which is 25% more harmful to the environment than carbon dioxide. Food scraps in your green bin are kept out of landfill and recycled into premium compost to use on our parks and farms.”

Putting your food scraps into your green bin is one small step from you but is one big step for the environment.

Residents are asked to take the pledge to get their scrap together and put all food scraps into their green bin. Anyone taking the pledge has the chance to win one of 3 fresh food hampers each valued at $100. There is one up for grabs each month in July, August, and September.
