Published on 15 April 2024

Kempsey’s award-winning laneway buzzed with excitement during the town’s second Youth Laneway Festival, a standout event of this year’s Youth Week.
Aisha Spokes, Kempsey Shire Council’s Community Projects Officer, commended everyone involved for making the festival a resounding success. “The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Despite a bit of rain, the event was a fantastic achievement and thoroughly enjoyed by the community and especially the young people who took part.” said Ms Spokes.
“The combination of street performers, musicians, visual artists, local businesses, interactive activities, and a convoy of food trucks created an incredible atmosphere and community spirit.”
Even with the rain that fell during the event, over 1500 festival-goers gathered for a captivating experience centred around Clyde Street and Savages Lane in the heart of Kempsey’s CBD.
Craig Milburn, Kempsey Shire Council’s General Manager, remarked on the festival’s dynamic energy and the exemplary display of community teamwork. "I am thoroughly impressed by the creativity and engagement shown at this year’s festival. It is a privilege to witness our young people shine and express themselves in such a vibrant environment. It was a fantastic event!" said Mr Milburn.
Youth Week is an opportunity for young individuals to demonstrate their creativity, express their views, tackle significant issues, and engage in or organise a variety of activities and events.
This year, the festival highlighted local talent, involving over 49 young people in various capacities including performances, co-MCing, participating in a youth street food cook-off, operating market stalls and activities, and featuring their artwork in the Savages Lane outdoor gallery exhibition.
The Council is thankful for the support from the NSW State Government, Office of Regional Youth, Autumn Holiday Break program, and Community Housing Limited.
