Help us make a plan to take care of our pools

Kempsey Shire Council wants your input into our aquatic facilities and services, which include:

  • Kempsey McElhone Swimming Complex - Belgrave Street, Kempsey

  • Crescent Aquatic Centre, Baker Drive, Crescent Head

  • South West Rocks Swimming Pool, Sportsmans Way, South West Rocks

  • Macleay Memorial Pool, Kinchela Street, Gladstone.

Your Say Macleay Survey

Our pools are important to the community, supporting quality of life and well-being across Kempsey Shire.

They are used right across the age groups, spanning a broad range of activities including learn to swim, squad, swimming competitions, lap swimming, rehabilitation, exercise programs, as well as fun for the whole family on hot days.

Council commits substantial funding to operate and maintain our four pools in Kempsey, South West Rocks, Crescent Head and Gladstone.

Our pools are ageing - for example, Kempsey pool was built in 1938. Careful planning is required to ensure that we are providing the right level of service and achieve value for money.

To support this planning in the short-to-medium term, we are developing a high-level Aquatic Strategy for Kempsey Shire.

To inform the strategy, Council will undertake a community survey through our Your Say Macleay page, from mid-August to 4 September 2023.

The survey consists of around 20 questions on existing use of aquatic facilities, future needs and expectations. We encourage all residents within the Shire to participate in this survey and share their views.

Your Say Macleay Survey

In conjunction with the survey, we will undertake industry benchmarking, stakeholder consultation, market and financial analysis as well as high level costings for future improvements, including a concept design for a minor refurbishment of our major aquatic facility, the Kempsey McElhone Swimming Complex.

A draft Aquatics Strategy will be released for comment in October, before reporting to Council for consideration in November 2023.
