The Macleay Valley is home to a number of stunning waterways including estuaries, which have a special place in the lives of Australians for their natural beauty, wildlife habitat and recreational opportunities.

Council has teamed up with the NSW Government in an effort to establish a response to estuaries becoming blocked or requests to temporarily block these entrances.

The estuaries included are Killick Creek, Korogoro Creek, Saltwater Creek and Back Creek. These coastal lakes and lagoons naturally open and close to the ocean and Council is responsible for managing the entrances including artificially opening them when required to alleviate flooding or improve water quality.

This project is being undertaken as part of the broader Coastal Management Program (CMP) for the Kempsey Shire Council Local Government Area Coastal Zone. The project is initiated by Kempsey Shire Council and is funded jointly through Council and the NSW State Government Coast and Estuary Grant Program.
