Kempsey Shire Council is set to establish a new Utilities Directorate to improve operations and project delivery.
At their meeting on Tuesday, Councillors voted to adopt a new structure that will establish a third directorate called Utilities. This recommendation was made to Council to ensure efficient and effective operations in the future.
Council is hoping to appoint a new director by July who will oversee Waste and Water and Sewer operations.
The Water and Sewer capital program involves projects totalling around $270 million to be completed over the next five years, and there is over $300 million forecast in capital expenditure across Water and Waste in that time.
Craig Milburn, General Manager, highlighted the need for additional executive level leadership to deliver a $300 million capital program.
"This decision is about having the right resources in place to deliver the program of works required,” said Mr Milburn.
“The single biggest driver for the introduction of a third directorate is that across Water Sewer and Waste in the next five years, there is over $300 million forecast in capital expenditure, and this type of highly technical, significant works requires additional strategic coordination and expert leadership."
The establishment of a new Utilities Directorate will provide sustainable waste services to the community, ensuring dedicated focus and appropriate resourcing. It will also help maintain compliance and reporting requirements and minimise delays in project delivery.
Following the endorsement of Councillors, a legislated period of internal consultation will commence ahead of recruitment with the aim of having a new Director join Council in the new financial year.
Kempsey Shire Council is committed to improving its operations and project delivery, and the establishment of a new Utilities Directorate is a critical step towards achieving this goal.
