Mayor's Column: Honouring traditions
Published on 23 April 2025
With Easter and Anzac Day falling so closely together this year, not only have we seen a welcome boost to the local tourist season, but we’ve also had meaningful opportunities to come together as a community—reflecting on the importance of service, sacrifice and the rural traditions that shape life in the Macleay.
Community service takes many forms, and during the Easter long weekend, our volunteer surf lifesavers right along the NSW coast were called to service. I am deeply saddened at the passing of Kaison Greaves at South West Rocks on Easter Sunday.
Our thoughts, prayers and heartfelt thanks go out to the first responders and lifesavers who worked so bravely in difficult circumstances. A heartbreaking tragedy for the family and everyone involved.
In 2025, we will mark 110 years since the landing of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps at Gallipoli. Anzac Day is a powerful reminder of the courage and resilience of our service men and women—past and present.
Across the shire, we will gather at dawn services, marches and mid-morning ceremonies to honour those who have served and continue to serve our nation in times of war and conflict.
We’ll wrap up a very full month with the Kempsey Show on 29 and 30 April.
Since 1881, the show has been a proud celebration of our rural lifestyle and strong agricultural heritage. While the rides, food, and exhibits have evolved over the years, the spirit of the event remains the same—it’s a chance to catch up with people from around the shire, support our local talent, and enjoy the entertainment in the main ring.
A huge thank you to Stewart Witchard, the hardworking show committee and the sponsors who have put in a huge effort to bring the event to life.
