Youth across the Macleay Valley recently attended the School of Safety Youth Safer Driving Day, proudly hosted by Kempsey Shire Council. A meaningful and engaging event aimed at supporting our local students as they take their first steps towards becoming responsible drivers.

Held at the Kempsey Airport, the open space provided the perfect backdrop for a hands-on, interactive experience. The venue gave the program space to showcase interactive activities that educated students on how to check their own vehicle, how emergency services operate around crash sites and dangerous driving demonstrations, truly bringing this event to life for the youth

Throughout the day, students heard from a wide range of presenters covering the risks and responsibilities that come with being behind the wheel. Topics covered included the dangers of speeding, distractions, and fatigue, to the serious consequences of drug and drink driving.

"The day is incredibly important to educate our youth on the ins and outs of getting on the road and educating them on how to get a licence, how important it is to get your legal standing correct and the responsibility that they have when they are on the road. The aim is to allow young people to make good independent choices that can have a lasting impact.” said Rhys Jones, Road Safety Officer.

There were plenty of eye-opening moments, great conversations, and a lot of learning, both serious and fun. Most importantly, students walked away with a better understanding of the choices they’ll soon be making as drivers and passengers.

A big thank you to the strong group of partners involved, including NRMA, Coffs and Mid North Coast Legal Centre, Behind the wheel, Service NSW, NSW Police, SES, Aldavilla Rural Fire Service, and more for all sharing their real-world knowledge and stories. Their presence helped bring home the message that road safety isn’t just about rules, it’s about looking after yourself, your mates, and everyone else on the road.
