A key Kempsey Shire causeway prone to flooding is set for a major upgrade, with a new 75-metre bridge replacing the frequently damaged Dungay Creek Causeway at Yessabah. Thanks to more than $3 million in natural disaster betterment funding from the Albanese and Minns Governments, this much-needed infrastructure improvement will enhance community safety and connectivity.

Over recent years, the causeway has suffered repeated damage due to natural disasters, leading to frequent closures that have isolated local residents. The new bridge will be built as a higher, more resilient concrete structure under the Regional Roads and Transport Recovery Package, a joint initiative between the Commonwealth and State Governments. This investment will fortify the road network, ensuring communities remain connected even during extreme weather events.

Work on the new bridge begins this month with the off-site construction of precast elements. On-site works, including preliminary groundwork, surveys, and environmental assessments, have already been completed, setting the stage for a smooth transition into full-scale construction starting in January 2025. The project is expected to be completed by February 2026, weather permitting.

Kempsey Shire Council Infrastructure Delivery Group Manager, Dylan Reeves, highlighted the project's significance:

“The Dungay Creek Causeway project is a significant undertaking for our community, enhancing the reliability and safety of access for Wittitrin residents. The existing causeway will remain open for most of the construction period, with only limited closures during key phases to minimise disruption.”

Kempsey Shire Mayor, Kinne Ring, also welcomed the upgrade:

“This bridge is a powerful step forward in connecting the Macleay Valley, improving road safety, and enhancing daily life for our residents. Made possible through the Regional Roads and Transport Recovery Package, it’s an essential piece of infrastructure that will provide safer, more reliable access for the entire community.”

The Dungay Creek bridge upgrade is a major step toward building a stronger, more resilient transport network in Kempsey Shire. By investing in reliable infrastructure, this project ensures that residents and businesses can stay connected, even in challenging conditions.

Kempsey Shire Council is committed to delivering high-quality infrastructure projects that improve the lives of its residents, and this new bridge is a testament to that commitment.
