As fire season approaches, it’s a time for us all to come together to protect our community and the natural beauty of the Macleay Valley. With warmer weather upon us, vigilance is essential, particularly in areas like reserves, sports fields, foreshore areas, beaches, and playgrounds, where fire risks are heightened.

In recent weeks, we’ve seen an increase in fires being started across the Shire, a troubling trend that reminds us of the serious dangers of igniting fires. Even small, unattended flames can rapidly grow, endangering lives, property, and our precious environment.

Lighting fires in public spaces is strictly prohibited, as these areas are especially vulnerable to the rapid spread of flames, putting our community, local wildlife, and natural landscapes at risk.

Steve Pellen, Coordinator of Civic Services, calls for extra caution.

“As we enter fire season, we urge everyone to remain vigilant. Fires should be limited to private land, and we strongly encourage the community to follow NSW RFS guidelines, especially on total fire ban days.” Said Steve.

Here’s how you can help keep our Valley safe and fire-ready this season:

  • Create or review your bushfire survival plan – Take a few moments to ensure your plan is up to date, covering where you’ll go, how you’ll communicate, and any changes to your property.

  • Prepare your property – Simple actions like mowing lawns, raking leaves, and clearing gutters can significantly reduce fire risk around your home.

  • Stay aware of daily bushfire danger ratings – Being informed about the day’s fire danger rating helps you stay alert to changing risks, especially on high-alert days.

  • Set up a reliable communication plan – Ensure you know how to get updates in a bushfire emergency, whether through NSW RFS alerts, local radio, or community messaging.

With the potential for fire to spread rapidly, even a small, unattended flame can escalate into a significant hazard. We urge everyone to respect these restrictions, especially as fire season intensifies, to help protect our surroundings and keep each other safe.

By taking these steps, we can make this fire season a safe one, keeping our community, homes, and natural spaces protected. Every action, big or small, helps build a safer, stronger Macleay Valley.
