Emergency action to preserve Crescent Head’s foreshore
Published on 06 November 2024
In the heart of Crescent Head, Killick Creek is more than a waterway—it’s an essential part of community life, connecting residents and visitors to the beach, footpaths, and the northern dune that frames this beloved coastal landscape.
Yet, over recent months, Killick Creek’s natural course has shifted, causing water to dangerously erode the northern sand dune and threatening nearby infrastructure.
Without swift action, the very essence of Crescent Head's foreshore could be at risk, prompting critical emergency foreshore works to preserve this treasured area for future generations.
The issue stems from a newly developed meander that has formed as sand buildup near the ocean entrance redirected the creek’s flow. This shift now channels water directly toward the northern dune, accelerating erosion and risking the stability of the footbridge, which links the community to Killick Beach.
For residents and visitors alike, the footbridge is a key feature, offering convenient beach access and stunning views of the natural beauty Crescent Head is known for.
Protecting it and ensuring safe access to the beach has become a top priority.
To address these challenges, the emergency foreshore works at Killick Creek are designed to stabilise the creek and safeguard public spaces. The project involves carefully excavating a small pilot channel at the creek’s eastern end, guiding water flows closer to the southern creek bank.
This diversion aims to alleviate pressure on the northern sand dune, slowing erosion and protecting the foundation of the footbridge. Sand removed during excavation will be used to reinforce the newly adjusted meander, adding an extra layer of protection to both the footbridge and the adjacent dune.
As anyone familiar with Crescent Head knows, preserving the integrity of Killick Creek and its surrounds isn’t just about infrastructure; it’s about maintaining the harmony of the natural environment that gives the area its unique charm.
Beyond the physical benefits, these foreshore works are an investment in Crescent Head’s future, ensuring that the community can continue to enjoy safe and unimpeded access to the beach while protecting the natural landscape that defines this region.
The location of the works, spanning the Killick Creek bed and sections of Council-managed Crown land, has been carefully assessed to minimise environmental impact while achieving maximum stability for the creek’s flow.
Zoned as both natural waterways and public recreation areas under the Kempsey Local Environmental Plan, this area requires thoughtful management to balance conservation with public accessibility—a balance that the emergency foreshore works strive to achieve.
This project serves as a reminder of the delicate interplay between nature and community in Crescent Head.
As the emergency works proceed, residents and visitors alike can feel assured that steps are being taken to safeguard Killick Creek’s vibrant ecosystem and the public amenities that connect people to this treasured landscape.
Crescent Head’s future is bright, with these foreshore protections ensuring it remains a safe, accessible, and beautiful place for all.
