Kempsey closer to naming Terry Giddy Sports Complex
Published on 01 November 2024
Thanks to your strong feedback, the proposed name change for Kemp Street Sports Complex to recognise a great Kempsey sportsperson, Terry Giddy OAM, is moving ahead.
At their August meeting, Council endorsed the renaming of Kemp Street Sports Complex to 'Terry Giddy Sports Fields' subject to community support.
The naming of Kemp Street Sports Complex as Terry Giddy Sports Fields went on public exhibition via a survey on Your Say Macleay from Friday 13 September 2024 to Friday 11 October 2024.
We received 172 responses were received in the form of survey responses and submissions, with 85% of the respondents supporting the name change.
Through consultation with the sportsfield stakeholders, it has been decided to alter the new name to 'Terry Giddy Sports Complex', instead of Sports Fields. This will allow the individual field names to remain the same i.e. Dangar 1, 2 etc. It is felt that this will provide clear guidance for visitors and users as to how to get to their assigned field within the complex, achieving the same recognition without creating confusion.
Based on the strong support for the name change, the proposal has now been lodged with the Geographical Names Board.
The review is expected to take approximately one month, and if approved, will be followed by the installation of appropriate signs and suitably inscribed plaque outlining the extensive achievements of Terry Giddy OAM at the fields.
The application to the Geographical Names Board will state 'Terry Giddy Sports Complex' but signage installed in the area will include OAM in recognition of the significance of this award.
