Kemp Street’s iconic fig tree in caring hands
Published on 01 November 2024
If you’ve ever strolled through Kemp Street Sporting Complex, there’s two figures that stands out — majestic fig trees that have watched over the grounds, providing shade, beauty, and a sense of history to our community.
Over time, they have become more than just trees; they are symbols of the connection between people and nature, leafy friends that have witnessed countless games, gatherings, and moments of reflection.
Recently, one of our beloved figs lost a large limb, sparking concerns for both its health and the safety of those around it. We understand how deeply this tree is treasured, not only for its beauty and age but also as a sanctuary for the wildlife it shelters.
Birds and countless other creatures call this fig tree home, adding vibrancy to the entire area. Kempsey Shire Council has received many inquiries from residents, each expressing heartfelt wishes to see this tree saved, and we want you to know we’re listening.
In response, we’ve taken immediate steps by fencing off the area and enlisting the expertise of local arborists. Their role is to carefully assess the tree’s condition and explore all possible options for its safe retention.
This process involves close examination and respectful consideration to ensure we are doing everything we can to protect this cherished part of Kemp Street’s natural landscape.
We know how important it is to keep the community updated, so as our assessments continue, we’ll make sure to share our progress with you. Our hope, like yours, is to preserve the fig tree in a way that ensures the safety of everyone who enjoys Kemp Street Sporting Complex, as well as the wildlife that calls it home.
