Arakoon Cemetery is set to undergo a significant upgrade, with works beginning in early November. This project will enhance the cemetery’s layout and amenities, supporting its continued role as a respectful and serene final resting place.

The improvements, anticipated for completion by February-March 2025, will include rehabilitating roads damaged by severe weather, formalising parking areas, and adding a substantial number of new memorial sites. These additions will better accommodate the needs of the community and provide a more accessible and organized environment.

The Arakoon Cemetery Master Plan, initially adopted in 2022, served as the foundation for these upgrades. During the detailed design phase, adjustments were made to the original plan to reduce the impact on native trees and to accommodate the site’s natural conditions.

This refined approach has also introduced essential road and drainage improvements to enhance accessibility and durability. Additionally, the project will see the installation of extra memorial walls, providing a beautiful space for commemoration and reflection.

The planned works reflect a thoughtful approach to development, respecting the cemetery’s natural surroundings while addressing the needs of its visitors. Community members are encouraged to visit the council website for regular updates as this important project progresses.

Council received grant funding, jointly funded by the Commonwealth and NSW Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements to support the delivery of this project.
