The Kempsey Theatre came alive today with the premiere of Life Stories of the Macleay in Flood, a film that captures the deep-rooted experiences and unwavering spirit of the Macleay Valley community during some of the most severe floods in its history.

Produced by Kempsey Shire Council with the support of the NSW Reconstruction Authority, this compelling film chronicles the personal accounts of residents and emergency responders as they recount the devastating floods of 1949, 1963, 2001, and more recent years.

As floods continue to pose a risk to the area, this film serves as both an educational tool and a vital reminder of the region’s resilience. By preserving these stories, the community ensures that current and future generations are better prepared for the challenges that may come, holding on to the invaluable lessons and hard-won wisdom of the past.

Mayor Kinne Ring expressed pride in the project, saying, “It’s a fantastic film about people who have lived through floods that have deeply impacted our community. This film is a testament to Kempsey's resilience. No matter what we’ve faced, we’ve always come together—Council, emergency services, and the community itself. We have much to reflect on and learn from these experiences, so that when future floods come, we know how to respond as a united community.”

Life Stories of the Macleay in Flood also brings unique insights from Kempsey Shire Council’s Group Manager of Infrastructure, Dylan Reeves, who has played a key role in flood response and recovery over recent years. “This film resonates with my experiences over the last few years,” Reeves shared. “Hearing these stories made me realise how previous generations overcame unimaginable hardships, with little support, standing resiliently on their own. We can’t underestimate the significance of having a flood plan and being ready. As we saw in 2021 and 2022, floods can change lives in an instant. I urge everyone to learn from these shared stories—understand the risks, prepare your families and businesses, and act swiftly.”

Flooding remains a significant risk for Kempsey and the Macleay Valley region due to the unique dynamics of the Macleay River, one of Australia’s fastest-flowing rivers.

Originating from the New England Tableland, its rapid, steep descent and narrow gorges mean that during heavy rainfall, waters surge dangerously, bringing potential disaster to the communities along its banks.

The film sheds light on these unique geographic challenges, with local emergency service representatives sharing how these factors shape the community’s flood response and recovery efforts.

Through first-hand narratives and vivid historical imagery, Life Stories of the Macleay in Flood is not only a journey into the past but a call to action for current and future residents of the Kempsey Shire. The film will be available for public viewing on Council’s website, providing a lasting resource for residents, school students, staff, and newcomers to the area.

In watching this film, the community is encouraged to understand their history, embrace the lessons of resilience, and prepare for a safer, more informed future.
