Book week winners bring a bit of magic to Kempsey libraries

This year's Book Week competition truly brought the magic of storytelling and art to life. With the theme "Reading is Magic," young participants from preschool to Year 12 were invited to select a magic word from a provided list and use it as inspiration for both a short story and an artwork.

The competition saw a fantastic array of entries, with popular words like Phoenix, Mermaid, Dragon, and Unicorn sparking the imaginations of our young creatives.

The standout winners displayed exceptional creativity and storytelling prowess. Ryley, the winner for the year 7-12 category, chose the word "Sword" and created a captivating drawing of a sword in a stone, reminiscent of the legendary King Arthur.

Jazzie, who won the year 3-6 category, wowed both librarians and library patrons with her beautiful depiction of a Phoenix and a sailing ship. Her thrilling story about a Mumma Phoenix on a daring sea adventure left readers on the edge of their seats.

In the year 3-6 People’s Choice category, Lara impressed with her expertly shaded Phoenix drawing and a heartwarming tale about a baby phoenix cared for by a young girl.

Lachie, the Preschool-Year 2 winner, wrote a sweet story about a kind elf named Alf, whose lesson on sharing and kindness won the hearts of the judges.

Tilly, another Preschool-Year 2 winner, captivated everyone with her enchanting rainbow unicorn, earning her the People’s Choice award.

The library has been deeply impressed by the creativity of all participants, whose work has added a touch of magic to the community.
