How do I register my dog?

Dog and cat

Under the Companion Animal Act, all pet cats and dogs must be microchipped and registered in NSW. Ensuring your pet's registration and updating your details regularly allows for the safe return of your pet if it gets lost. Here's a simple guide to help you through the process.

Step 1: Microchipping

Before registering your dog, it needs to be microchipped by a vet or an authorised identifier. All cats and dogs must be microchipped by 12 weeks of age or before being sold or given away. This tiny device provides a permanent identification method for your pet.

Step 2: Registration

Once your dog or cat is microchipped, you must register it by 12 weeks of age or immediately upon transfer, whichever occurs first. Registration is a one-time, lifetime fee, which remains valid even if ownership changes. You have two options for registration: online or in-person at your local council.

Online Registration:

1. Visit the NSW Pet Registry.

2. Create an account or log in if you already have one.

3. Provide your email address and personal details.

4. Submit one proof of identity document (e.g., Australian Driver’s Licence, Australian Passport, Medicare Card).

5. Enter the microchip number.

6. Make the payment.

In-Person Registration:

1. Visit your local council office.

2. Bring your identification documents and microchip number.

3. Complete the registration form and make the payment.

Fees

The registration fee is a one-time payment for the lifetime of your pet. The owner must pay an extra registration fee for dogs that are not desexed by 6 months of age and cats that are not desexed by 4 months of age. It's important to note that having an unregistered animal can result in an on-the-spot fine.
