There are three projects on public exhibition this month, including proposed charges for Council electric vehicle charging stations, the Lower Macleay Flood Risk Management Study and Plan, and the Kempsey Shire Coastal management Program.

Proposed charges for Council electric vehicle charging station

Council is proposing to charge a fee for people who use Council-owned electric vehicle charging stations, which up until now have been free to use. There are two Council owned charging stations in the Kempsey Shire – one at the Slim Dusty Centre and the other Back Creek, South West Rocks.

Under the proposal, users will be charged at a rate of $0.25/kW which works out on average to cost about $15 to charge a 60kW battery from empty to full.

The proposed charges will help cover the energy costs, as well as the costs of the online charging and monitoring platform which runs the EV chargers.

Draft Lower Macleay Flood Risk Management Study and Plan

The Flood Risk Management Study and Plan identifies key actions to reduce the flood risk for the Lower Macleay floodplain, mainly planning and engineering solutions.

Detailed modelling was used to assess the flood impacts on the community, understand where the evacuation constraints are, and create a single, unified model for the area.

The flood risk reference group met several times to discuss the flood study and assess available options, and their comments and recommendations were used to shape the options that were chosen. There was also a community workshop and survey which were used gain feedback on the options.

Kempsey Shire Coastal Management Program

The Kempsey Shire Coastal Management Program (CMP) establishes a long-term strategy for coordinated land management in the coastal zone of Kempsey Shire.

This includes managing approximately 80 kilometers of open coast, Killick Creek estuary at Crescent Head, Korogoro Creek estuary at Hat Head, Saltwater Creek and Lagoon at South West Rocks, and the Macleay River Estuary, including Kempsey, Fishermans Reach, and Back Creek.

Key reasons for the program are to address ongoing threats to the natural coastal environment, built infrastructure, cultural heritage, and the uncertainty posed by climate change.
