Celebrating a greener future: National Tree Day success!
Published on 01 August 2024
On July 26, the Kempsey Shire Council celebrated National Tree Day with a successful free tree giveaway event. In a remarkable display of community spirit and environmental stewardship, we distributed 1,500 native plants and trees, 400 punnets of vegetables, and 80 fruit trees across various locations. The event, held in the morning at South West Rocks Library and in the afternoon at Kempsey Library, was well-attended by enthusiastic residents eager to green their spaces.
In addition to these generous giveaways, 2,000 seed sticks were included in our gift bags, offering participants the chance to grow their own plants from scratch. The community's response was overwhelming, with 91% (31 out of 34) of local preschools, primary and high schools, and childcare centers participating in Schools Tree Day. This high level of involvement underscores the growing awareness and commitment to sustainability among our youngest residents.
We extend our gratitude to the local suppliers who made this event possible. Gone Native from Crescent Head provided a variety of native plants, Arakoon Pandanus Landcare Trust supplied more natives in South West Rocks, and Valley Garden Centre generously offered citrus trees. Their support highlights the importance of local businesses in fostering a sustainable and green future for our Shire.
For those who couldn't attend the event, there are still limited native plants available. Residents who missed out can visit our Customer Service center to pick up these plants while stocks last.
National Tree Day was a wonderful opportunity to connect with nature and our community, and we look forward to continuing this tradition in the years to come. Let's keep growing together!
