Celebrating Slim Dusty's 97th Birthday: A Community's Tribute

Hundreds came together last week for a heartfelt celebration of what would have been Slim Dusty’s 97th birthday, and it turned out to be a day to remember. 

With new exhibits unveiled and touching stories shared, the celebration on Thursday 13 June captured the essence of Slim’s enduring legacy and the deep affection the community holds for him and his family.

The highlight of the day was the unveiling of new exhibits at the Slim Dusty Centre. Anne Kirkpatrick, the daughter of Slim and Joy McKean, had the honour of cutting the ribbon. The new exhibits feature original song lyrics handwritten by Slim and Joy, offering a personal glimpse into the creative minds behind some of Australia’s most beloved country music.

Anne Kirkpatrick captivated the audience with touching stories about her parents, bringing Slim and Joy’s remarkable journey to life. Her anecdotes provided a deeper understanding of their personal and professional lives, further endearing them to the crowd.

The celebration saw 398 visitors walk through the doors of the Slim Dusty Centre, surpassing all expectations. This impressive turnout is a testament to how much Slim, Joy, and their family are cherished by fans near and far. Many attendees were Kempsey Shire residents and school groups who enjoyed free access to the museum for most of the day.

A significant number of fans travelled from outside the area to join the festivities, demonstrating the wide-reaching impact of Slim’s music and legacy.

The celebration was not just about reminiscing but also about enjoying the moment. Attendees were treated to coffee, tea, and a special birthday cake, fostering a warm and friendly atmosphere, with everyone coming together to honour Slim’s memory and celebrate his lasting influence on Australian country music.
