Pollution incident at South West Rocks Back Creek boat ramp

Update on the unknown substance released into Back Creek Boat Ramp on the morning of 19 December 2023.

As a precaution Kempsey Shire Council placed No Swimming Signs located at the boat ramp and on the bridge.

Council officers have since monitored the site and liaised with NSW Health.

Council's investigation has led to the decision to remove the no swimming signs at all locations and deemed Back Creek safe to be open to the public.

Kempsey Shire Council will continue to monitor the site and would like to thank the community for assisting us in providing helpful information.

Council has been advised of a suspected pollution incident at Back Creek boat ramp, South West Rocks.

It is alleged shortly after 8:30am on Tuesday 19 December, a vehicle with two Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBC) containers on a trailer was seen emptying the contents onto the boat ramp, which subsequently entered Back Creek.

The milky white substance is unknown at this stage and could potentially be hazardous.

Signage is being installed to advise residents to avoid swimming in Back Creek until the water is deemed safe.

Council is working with EPA and NSW Health to identify appropriate sampling methods, given the substance is unknown at this time.
