Pet adoption profile – From foster family to forever home with Giles

During Local Government Week 2023 our team is sharing their own stories of pet adoption to inspire others to help impounded animals across the Kempsey Shire to find their forever homes.
Working in Council communications, Giles our Communications and Engagement Manger wanted to find out about the Kempsey Shire Pound and how he could help to get pets adopted. That soon turned into volunteering with Friends of Kempsey Pound.
When asked to share his pet adoption story Giles commented “which one?”
“My family are volunteer carers with Friends of Kempsey Pound. We are a pretty good testing ground for a kitten or puppy as we have children, dogs and cats so if they are happy with us they’re good for most homes. We were fostering Marcia and her daughter Demi when we noticed that Marcia was a ‘kinder surprise’ as she has something growing within. So while Demi went off to her forever home, Marcia stayed for the duration of her pregnancy. Lo and behold on the pink moon in 2022 Marcia decided to give birth between my legs while I slept! She gave us two kittens, Luna and Oberon. Marcia and Oberon have stayed with us.
Then there is Gus, our ‘rotten shepherd’. He’s a German Shepherd cross Rottweiller and he came to the pound very malnourished. We were asked to foster him and to ensure there weren’t any issues we brought our two dogs to the pound for a chemistry test. They all got along so well. Since then Gus has grown… and grown… and grown. He’s now a big, big softie and our third (and we swear final) foster fail!
Gile’s advice to pet lovers considering adoption is:
"DOOOOO IIIIIIITTTTTTTTT! I used to be so wary of the idea because “what if they are dangerous or it doesn’t work or … something” but it turns out there are heaps of safeguards and the animals in the pound system are almost all absolute darlings with loads of love to share."
