Pet adoption profile – Two pets pulled at Kerryn’s heart strings
Published on 03 August 2023
During Local Government Week 2023 our team is sharing their personal stories of pet adoption to inspire others to help displaced animals find their forever homes.
Kerryn our Group Manager Corporate Services adopted both her dog Basil and cat Mango from animal shelters. Both pet’s stories are truly heartwarming tails of pets given a new lease on life by the kindness and love of a new owner.
Previously abused, Kerryn spotted Basil and his hot concrete shelter in Darwin and just had to take him home. A few years later at a local animal adoption day, Kerryn was told it was Mango’s last day on earth and seeing what is best described by Kerryn as “a scrawny runt of a cat who was malnourished from living wild in the forest” was all she needed to see before she decided to adopt.
When asked about the thing she loves most about her adopted pets Kerryn says “Seeing them becoming their own personality and thrive in a home environment.”
Kerryn says she finds so much joy in “coming home to the excitement of Basil and Mango greeting me each day” and says her pets provide a constant source of entertainment getting up to lots of antics together commenting “Mango the cat is definitely the boss!”
Kerryn’s advice to new pet owners considering adoption:
“Adopt don’t shop. Give a home to pets who need one. Plenty of rescue animals come from homes of the elderly who can simply no longer care for them and instead of buying a bred animal, please give a home to one who already needs one.”
Thank you to Kerryn for sharing your beautiful story about Basil and Mango, showing it’s truly possible to rehome multiple pets who now all get on well and are thriving in their new homes.
