New roundabout progressing well on Lachlan Street

Media release - 7 September 2018

Motorists have transitioned well to changed traffic conditions in South Kempsey with work getting underway this week on a new roundabout at the Lachlan Street and Middleton Street intersection.

Council’s Acting Manager of Infrastructure Delivery, Tony Green, thanked the community for their patience and understanding while the works have been taking place.

“Work on the roundabout started on Monday 3 September and is expected to take approximately three weeks to complete, weather permitting, Mr Green said.

“The new concrete roundabout will make turning movements to and from Middleton Street safer and easier particularly during the morning and afternoon peak traffic periods.

“The centre islands are currently being constructed and while this takes place, trucks and buses will not be able to make right hand turns to and from Middleton Street.

“Signs have been installed directing trucks and buses to use Yarravel or Nicholson Streets as alternative routes.”

Traffic control will be in place while the works are carried out and short delays may be experienced. Please drive to the conditions.

Council has also engaged local artists Kyara Fernando and Stephen McLeod to design flags to be installed in the centre of the new roundabout upon completion.

The flags will feature Dunghutti-inspired artwork as well as the welcome message: Yawayi. Dhanang, marrungga barriya dhitiyndha which means ‘Hello. you all be well in this country’ in Dunghutti.

The roundabout works are part of the $800,000 upgrades that have been taking place along Lachlan Street and are the last component of the Kempsey Corridor Master Plan.

The project has been jointly funded by Council and the State Government as part of the handover of the old Pacific Highway.
