Local Government Week 2018

Community life - 24 July 2018

Local Government Week runs from 30 July to 5 August and aims to promote the important services Kempsey Shire Council provides to residents, ratepayers and businesses.

This year’s theme is ‘The Power of Community’. While it is widely known that council manages rates, roads and rubbish, what many people don’t realise is that council’s services go well beyond that.

Council works with several different community groups, businesses and contractors to deliver new or improved facilities such as playgrounds, parks, gardens and amenity blocks.

Council attends and supports community events on a regular basis such as the recent local NAIDOC Week celebrations. Artists and schools are also frequently engaged to work with council in delivering public art installations such as murals and sculptures, community workshops, events and music festivals.

Some of council’s most recent successful partnerships have included hosting the Festival of Small Halls summer tour in February. The event was a huge success with more than 200 residents and visitors packing out the Frederickton School of Arts Hall.

This year, Council also partnered with the South West Rocks Chamber of Commerce and businesses in Kempsey and Crescent Head to host the Live and Local Macleay music trail initiative.

The events received positive support and praise from the community and the businesses involved expressed a strong willingness to work with council again on music events in the future.

Local Government Week is a perfect opportunity for residents to discover the ways Council is part of the local community by attending some of the scheduled events.

A free tour of the Boyters Lane Wetlands will be held on Friday 3 August at 10am by Council’s Senior Natural Resources Officer, Ron Kemsley.

Staff will also be on hand to answer any questions at an information stall at the Kempsey Riverside Markets on Saturday 4 August.
