Poetry Slam heat and workshop at Kempsey Library

Media release - 3 July 2018

Kempsey Library has been selected as one of the NSW venues to host a heat and workshop of the Australian Poetry Slam (APS).

The search is on for brave new voices to take the stage and win over the audience with their original spoken word poetry.

Librarian, Yvette McAlister, said participants will be given a microphone, a live audience and just two minutes to impress the judges with their original spoken poetry, hip-hop, stories or whatever they do with words.

“Two writers from the Kempsey Poetry Slam heat will be chosen to perform at the NSW State Final in Sydney in mid-October. Two wordsmiths from each state and territory will then head to the Australian Poetry Slam National Final the following day.”

“Regardless of age, location, cultural background or education, anyone can participate.”

Those wanting to sharpen their words before the heat are encouraged to attend a free workshop, run by the 2017 Australian Poetry Slam Adult Champion, Jesse Oliver, at the library from 1pm to 3pm on Thursday 9 August.

Bookings for this free workshop are essential and should be done before Friday 20 July as it will be strictly limited to 20 people.

Sign up for the Poetry Slam Heat will open at 4:30pm before it all gets underway at 5pm in the library.
