New bridges provide safer access

The Macleay Valley community will benefit from five new bridges due for completion throughout the Shire over the coming months, as part of Kempsey Shire Council’s Timber Bridge Replacement Program.

Council’s Acting Manager Engineering Works, Tony Green, said each year Council aims to replace approximately four timber bridges with modern concrete structures that are safer for motorists, reduce the need for load limit restrictions and require less maintenance.

“The Shire currently has 94 timber bridges that will eventually need to be replaced at the end of their effective life, or when it is no longer cost-effective to carry out refurbishment works,” Mr Green said.

A new concrete bridge built by Council’s bridge team was opened to traffic at Knauers Bridge, Kinchela on Monday 7 May.

The replacement of two 50-year-old timber bridges is underway on Nulla Nulla Creek Road (McIntyres Bridge) and on Schmidts Road (Schmidts Bridge), with the works expected to be finished by the end of May.

These new bridges have raised the road level by one metre, providing residents with safe access for longer periods during flood events.

Council’s team will now commence work on a new bridge on Saleyards Road, and contractors are due to start work at Turners Flat Bridge in September.

The draft Operating Plan for Kempsey Shire Council 2018-2019 includes investment next financial year of more than $10 million on refurbishing the roads and bridges network.

“Council maintains a total of 171 bridges across the local government area, ranging from river crossings on major roads to creek crossings that service only a few properties,” Mr Green said.

“Bridge works form part of Council’s strategic objective to support a wealthy community, by increasing the value of production and providing key links within the local transport network.”
