Lower Macleay Flood Risk Management Technical Group

Media release - 2 May 2018

Residents with experience with floods are encouraged to help Kempsey Shire Council with the next stage of flood management for the Lower Macleay.

Council is currently seeking expressions of interest from residents to join a focus group to assist in developing a plan of management for the Lower Macleay floodplain.

In line with the NSW Government’s Flood Policy and compliant with the NSW Governments Flood Development Manual, Council is reviewing the existing Lower Macleay Floodplain Management Plan (1999) and undertaking additional flood investigations to prepare a Lower Macleay Flood Risk Management Plan.

The plan will include detailed evaluation of all the factors that impact on the use of flood prone land and help guide Council’s statutory planning in relation to this land.

Council’s Senior Natural Resources Officer, Ron Kemsley, said to assist in the development of the plan, Council are looking to establish a Lower Macleay Flood Risk Management Technical Group.

“The group will be both the focus of and a forum for the discussion of social, economic and ecological issues relative to the lower Macleay Floodplain as well as considering the technical side of flood management,” Mr Kemsley said.

“A maximum of four community representatives are required for the group and we are looking for nominations that describe their experience with floods, relevant skills and what connections or community groups they may belong to in order to reach more residents.”

Residents looking to be part of the group should complete an Expression of Interest form on Council’s website at www.kempsey.nsw.gov.au/lower-macleay

Once completed, either return your application form to Council’s Customer Service Centre or email it to ksc@kempsey.nsw.gov.au attention: Ron Kemsley.
