Work starts on new road in South Kempsey

Media release - 29 September 2017

The construction of a 750-metre new stretch of road, connecting South Street to Gowings Hill Road in South Kempsey, is currently underway.

The work is being carried out by Eire Constructions after they were awarded the tender at the August Council meeting.

Kempsey Shire Council’s Manager of Engineering Works, Tony Green, said initial works to prepare for the construction of the new road will involve clearing along Gowings Hill Road between Marr Way and Lika Drive and will be followed by earthworks requiring the use of earthmoving equipment and trucks.

“During construction a temporary speed zone will be enforced, traffic control will be in place as required and short delays can be expected,” Mr Green said.

“Council appreciates the cooperation and support of local residents while these works are carried out.”

Once completed, the new road will be a huge benefit to South Kempsey residents with up to 70 truck movements a day to be diverted from Middleton and West streets.

The work is expected to take six months to complete, weather permitting.

Rehabilitation work in the industrial area of South Street to repair kerb and guttering, stabilisation and asphalting is also progressing well.

“These works will continue and are expected to be completed in eight weeks,” Mr Green said.
