Update on CBD road works

Media release - 22 August 2017

Improvements and maintenance of high traffic roads and business precincts in West Kempsey forms part of the 2017-2018 program of works for Kempsey Shire Council’s Infrastructure Services department.

Safer and more visible pedestrian access, additional parking spaces and a more attractive streetscape will be the results of the revitalisation works underway on the Western end of Elbow Street.

The budget for this financial year also includes a $1.6 million revamp of Tozer Street, West Kempsey.

Initial work underway in this area has seen the removal of failed kerb and guttering with replacement road pavement and bitumen sealing to be carried out in coming weeks. These works will see the road conditions and safety on the busy corner of Elbow and Tozer Street improved.

The work has seen traffic control in place to manage intermittent restrictions to vehicle access for some driveways and businesses. Council appreciates the cooperation and support motorists and residents have displayed while this work is underway.

Council’s Manager of Engineering Works, Tony Green advises that in conjunction with the works underway, designs are currently being finalised for the majority of the Tozer Street project.

“The bulk of the Tozer Street work will commence early in the New Year. We will work with businesses in finalising the designs and consider changes to parking between Marsh Street and Edinburgh Lane to create an overall increase in parking spots,” said Mr Green.

The project will also include softening the streetscape with the use of trees in the median.

“Elbow and Tozer streets are important gateways to the increasingly popular business precinct in West Kempsey. Taking into account the traffic to the hospital and a number of schools in the area, it is a really valuable investment to ensure safe and smooth traffic flows.

“Council will work with affected businesses and residents in coming months to finalise the plans and negotiate the construction timeframes for Tozer Street,” said Mr Green.
