Kempsey Library to host Australian Poetry Slam

Media release - 12 July 2017

All you need is a voice to perform your poems, stories, lyrics and monologues in the Australian Poetry Slam 2017 - a live literary performance where the audience is the judge.

Kempsey Shire Library will be hosting a regional heat of the Australian Poetry Slam on Friday 11 August.

Librarian Yvette McAlister said anyone can participate, all you need is your voice.

“Local poets, storytellers, hip hop artists, stand-up comedians - whatever you do with words, you’ll have two minutes to impress the judges with your original spoken word,” Ms McAlister said.

“But if performing isn”t for you, then come along, grab a seat and cheer the local contestants on.”

Hosting the Kempsey heat will be the 2014 Australian Poetry Slam Champion Zohab Khan who will be throwing five chocolates into the audience and whoever catches one becomes a judge.

The five judges will then hold up the scores that will send two performing writers to the NSW Final in Sydney on 14 October.

The current Australian Poetry Slam Champion Arielle Cottingham will also be in attendance to deliver a set of her award-winning spoken word while Liam from Macleay Entertainment will be playing music throughout the slam to keep the energy flowing throughout the night.

Sign on is at 4:30pm if you plan to perform or come along at 5pm to be part of the audience.
