Improvements to community infrastructure

Community life - 4 July 2017

Significant improvements to community and recreational infrastructure have been achieved across the Macleay in recent months, with more projects to be prioritised into the new financial year.

After receiving a $90,000 grant from the NSW Government under its NSW Boating Now program, Kempsey Shire Council recently completed upgrade work to the Mattys Flat boat ramp area at South West Rocks and access improvement works at Fishermans Reach.

The NSW Boating Now program aims to further enhance the user experience by improving the capacity and amenity of boating infrastructure on NSW waterways.

The Mattys Flat work involved levelling the sides of the boat ramp to minimise drop off, installation of guide posts on the outer edges of the boat ramp lanes, line marking and the installation of solar lights at the ramp, wharf and boat wash down area.

Restoration work was also carried out to the rock bank to rectify erosion of the foreshore and steps were also installed to allow access to the beach and improve safety so boats can be beached while the owner gets their trailer.

Work at Fishermans Reach included sealing the existing dirt access approach to the ramp, the ramp manoeuvring area and closing off the site’s secondary access road.

Two other boating projects, also funded by the NSW Boating Now program and to be constructed in the new financial year include a floating pontoon at Jerseyville and a fixed wharf at Riverside Park, Kempsey. These have received funding support as they will increase recreation options and use of the waterways.

Council have also committed to continued investment in renewing public amenities across the Shire. Work is progressing well on the new amenities block within the Crescent Head Reserve which combines environmental factors and modern design principles, to make the amenities safe and easy to clean. The NSW State Government has made a $166,000 contribution to the project through the Public Reserve Management Fund Program.

Council currently has a tender out for work to upgrade the amenities in Clyde Street Mall, which will seek to focus on the same modern design principles.
