Revitalisation works for West Kempsey

Media release - 30 June 2017

Residents and businesses will benefit from additional parking spaces, improved pedestrian access and a more attractive street with revitalisation works underway from the intersection of Elbow and Tozer Streets in West Kempsey.

In order to achieve the best result and minimise the overall impact on residents and businesses, the project combines work from both the water main and road renewals programs. Work to replace the aging water main on the Southern corner of Elbow and Tozer Streets has begun ahead of road construction and streetscape works starting in the coming week.

The project will result in a gain of eight extra parking spaces by converting kerb side parking from angle to parallel and creating centre parking, in line with the Eastern end of Elbow Street. The work will also involve upgrades to kerb and guttering, footpaths and the road pavement as well as tree planting and extending the 40km/h speed limit a further 25m to the west side of the Harold Walker Avenue intersection.

Council’s Manager of Engineering Works, Tony Green, said the project, which was recently approved by the Local Traffic Committee, is in addition to the recently completed roadworks in River Street, North Street, Short Street and Cochrane Street totalling more than $2 million.

“Combined parallel kerb side parking with central parking has been in operation for more than five years in Elbow Street and we believe it will work well for the rest of the street,” Mr Green said.

“During the work, vehicle access to properties may be restricted intermittently. Traffic control will be in place as required and every effort will be made to maintain access to businesses.

“While the work is extremely weather dependent, it is anticipated to take about three months to complete. Council appreciates the cooperation and support of local residents while the works are carried out.”

To avoid delays alternative routes should be considered where possible.
