Macleay River update

8:15am 19 March 2017

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) have issued a flood warning for the Macleay River:

The water levels have risen rapidly overnight and all the low level bridges are closed.

The level at Bellbrook appears to have peaked for now at 5.33m, but Georges Creek has started rising again. All the other monitoring stations are rising - Kempsey Traffic Bridge was at 2.59m at 7:00am and BoM has predicted it may reach 5.2m this afternoon.

Other known road closures overnight are Gladstone Street underpass and Queen Street. There are also reports of water over road at Skillion Flat, and there are some minor landslips upriver.

More information will be issued later this morning.

Residents and visitors are urged to remain cautious on the roads for localised impacts and not attempt to drive through floodwaters or cross flooded bridges.

Council staff will continue to monitor the situation throughout the weekend.
