Have a say on CBD flood study
Community life - 7 February 2017
Residents have the opportunity to have a say on the Kempsey CBD Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan which is on public exhibition until Friday 24 February.
The flood study predicts, maps and discusses flood behaviour for the Kempsey CBD and surrounding urban area.
The flood mapping within the draft Study and Plan includes flood levels, depths, a range of possible scenarios and recommends potential management actions.
By undertaking the study, Council has updated information and can better plan for future flood events.
A hydraulic report undertaken in 2015 and the preparation of the of the draft Kempsey Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan, has enabled Council to review and update previous flood assessments for the CBD and surrounding urban areas, and use the latest data and modelling techniques to gain a greater understanding of likely flood behaviour.
Council encourages the community to review these important draft documents, look at how the possible flood scenarios impact you and make a submission.
The draft Study and Plan have been developed in accordance with the NSW Government’s Flood Prone Land Policy and Floodplain Development Manual (2005) and received financial and technical assistance from the Office of Environment and Heritage.
The draft Plan contains 16 recommended actions to address issues and risks identified in the draft Study.
Council is running two information sessions to provide the public and business operators a chance to review the draft Floodplain Study and Plan in detail and to ask questions to assist with making a submission.
A community session will be held on Monday 13 February from 5:30pm to 7:30pm and a session for business owners will be held on Wednesday 15 February from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. Both sessions will be held at Council offices on Tozer Street, West Kempsey.
