Lower Macleay Flood Hypothetical
Saturday 10 March 2018

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES), Lower Macleay Community Action Team and Kempsey Shire Council conducted a community flood education exercise for residents of the Lower Macleay at the Smithtown Bowling Club on Saturday 10th March 2018.

Close to the five year anniversary of major flooding on the Macleay River back in February of 2013, the aim of the interactive hypothetical was to get residents thinking about what actions individuals and communities can take to help emergency services protect life and minimise property damage during floods.

The scenarios for the “table top” exercise were be based on the rainfall totals, timings and warnings that occurred during the 2013 event which saw the Macleay river peak at 7.1 metres at the Kempsey gauge.
