Proposal to name sports oval at South Kempsey

Council has received a request from the Macleay Valley Cricket Association to name the sports oval at South Kempsey the “Jim Stirling Oval”.

Mr Stirling moved to the shire after he completed Teachers College in 1951 and lived the rest of his life here.

His first post after teachers College was to Burnt Bridge Public School, where he spent 5 years teaching, followed by 4 years at East Kempsey School and 17 years at West Kempsey School. Mr Stirling contributed greatly to sports in the Macleay Valley. He won Shire’s Sportsman of the Year award in 1990 and received the Alan Border Medal in the early 2000’s for his 50 plus years of service to cricket. He was a life member of the Macleay Valley Cricket Association and was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for his services to primary education, sporting groups and indigenous health.
