Kempsey Shire Art Prize 2011

The Macleay Valley Community Art Gallery Committee would like to thank all exhibiting artists in the 2011 Kempsey Shire Art Prize exhibition for the high standard of the art work entered, the Gladstone Primary School P&C for their great catering, the Silver Strings for providing a musical backdrop at the opening and all the gallery volunteers who worked hard to put the exhibition together and who have opened the exhibition daily for visitors.

The results in the 2011 Art Prize were:

Section 1: Kempsey Shire Art Prize
Open to all entries. Prize: $3,000

Winner: Alan Frazer for his painting Summertime.
Judge's comment: An outstanding traditional art work will always hold its own against any art. The washed out colour scheme shows this country as it is. The light is beautiful. It is simple, straight forward and elegant.

Section 2: 3D Sculpture
First prize: $1,000 / Highly commended: $100

First Prize: Plonk by Gregory Barnett.
Judges comment: A humorous and warm look at iconic Australian materials and concepts. Beautifully crafted.

Highly Commended: Palmat by Glen Wilkinson
Judges comment: A beautiful tactile sculpture showing a contemporary adaptation of the tradition of weaving. Taken from nature. A warm and skilful work.

Section 3: Painting (any medium)
First prize: $1,000 / Highly commended: $100

First Prize: Pig Pig by Simone Atkins
Judges comment: Simone has used her paint in luscious confident brushstrokes of vivid colour. She is technically very clever with a wonderful feel for composition, colour and paint application.

Highly Commended: Richie Donovan by Kristen Hardiman
Selected for the incredible emotion captured in the eye of the subject.

Section 4: Photography
First Prize: $1,000 / Highly commended: $100

First Prize: Back Beach South West Rocks by John Nalder
Judges comment: Simple stunning landscape. Assisted by nature, it makes the viewer take a deep breath, inhale the fresh clean beauty.

Highly Commended: The Meeting by Greg Williams
Judges comment: A contemporary narrative. Enigmatic. It engages the viewer – makes them think, try to work out the story. Subtle light.

Section 5: Works on Paper
First prize: $1,000 / Highly commended: $100

First Prize: River Gums by Gail Cardow
Judges comment: An expertly executed traditional work showing fine technical skills.

Highly commended: Thredbo Summer by Robin Parker
Judges comments: An inventive and contemporary interpretation of the rugged Snowy Mountains landscape. Has used her own style, her own analysis and made a unique scene.
